Machu Picchu is the reason many people travel to Peru — but rarely the reason they remember it best.
The country holds one of the most varied topographies in the world. The Andes cut through the middle with glaciers, canyons and high-altitude lakes at elevations that thin the air. To the east, the terrain drops towards the Amazon rainforest, home to pink river dolphins, giant otters and macaws in every colour. At Lake Titicaca on the Bolivian border, the Uros people live on floating islands woven from totora reeds, where tradition is still part of everyday life.
Over the past twenty years, Lima has emerged as South America's gastronomic capital. Ceviche, tiradito and causa are just the beginning — the city's chefs have made Peruvian cuisine famous around the world.
Peru combines naturally with Bolivia, Chile or Ecuador and suits travellers who want to hike the Inca Trail just as well as those who prefer the train to Machu Picchu.
