On the Galápagos, sea lions doze on the jetties as you walk past, blue-footed boobies perform their mating dances out in the open, and marine iguanas bask on the rocks at arm's length.
The islands lie in the Pacific west of Ecuador's coast and shelter species found nowhere else — giant tortoises, flightless cormorants, red-footed boobies and Darwin's finches among them. Below the surface, cold and warm ocean currents meet to create a rich marine life of fur seals, sharks, rays and tropical fish. Snorkelling here is an experience in itself.
One of the most appreciated ways to experience the Galápagos is on an expedition cruise, which makes it possible to reach islands and sites that are otherwise hard to access. If you prefer land to sea, hotel-based options are also available.
